Structural Audit for Intangible Assets

An independent research institution measuring how long a brand's pricing power can hold, not what the brand is worth today.

Founded: 2025 Founding Partner: Amanda Zhang Governed by: BSIP v4.0 Jurisdiction: Hong Kong SAR

A company can post record revenue in the same year its pricing power begins to fail. The two numbers rarely move together. Revenue is a lagging signal; a brand's ability to command a premium erodes first, often for a year or more, before the income statement admits anything is wrong.

Under current accounting standards, a brand's value is recorded once, at the moment it is acquired, then held on the balance sheet as goodwill: a static number, rarely revisited except when it fails. Between that entry and its eventual write-down sits a structural process that accounting was never built to track. BCI Lab exists to read that interval.

What We Do

BCI Lab is an independent structural audit institution. We are not a brand strategy firm, and we do not produce trend forecasts, creative campaigns, or market commentary.

Our work is to observe how a brand's pricing power behaves across time, not how it performs in a single reporting period. We audit the structural conditions that determine whether a premium can hold: the size of the gap between what something costs to make and what a customer will pay for it, how easily that gap is understood and copied by the market, whether the premium compounds with time or is consumed by it, and whether the system sustaining that premium is being reinvested in or drawn down.

Each observation is graded by the reliability of the data behind it, disclosed alongside the reading rather than folded into a single confident number. Where a dimension cannot be measured to a defensible standard, we disclose that gap rather than estimate past it.

The Four Variables

BCI's diagnostics are built on four structurally independent variables, defined in full in the BCI Structural Integrity Protocol.

MTMeaning Tension

The degree to which a brand commands price for what it means, not what it costs to produce.

PLPerceptual Legibility

How easily the market can read, understand, and copy the brand's value proposition; the threshold where being understood starts to erode being wanted.

TSTime Structure

Whether a premium compounds across years, the way a mechanical watch or an archived handbag gains value on the resale market, or is spent down within a season.

ESEnergy State

Whether the system generating the premium is being reinvested in, or extracted from to meet a near-term number.

These four variables interact multiplicatively, not additively: a structural weakness in one is not offset by strength in another. The full mathematical treatment, the data-reliability standard behind each proxy, and the current state of what is and is not yet calibrated are maintained in the BSIP and its companion Methodology Version Register, both published and version-controlled independently of this page.

Who This Is For

BCI Lab's readers are the people who have to act on a structural judgment and answer for it afterward: private equity and strategic acquirers evaluating a brand asset before a transaction, boards and risk committees monitoring a portfolio brand's pricing power over time, and credit and equity analysts looking for a structural signal ahead of the financial one.

This is not written for reach. A structural diagnostic that has to be simple enough for a general audience has usually already given up the precision that made it worth producing.

What This Is Not

BCI Lab is an observation instrument, not an advisor. A structural reading describes a condition; it does not tell a reader what to do about it, and it is not an evaluation of any management team's competence, motive, or compliance.

BCI does not provide valuation opinions, credit ratings, or buy, sell, or hold recommendations, and its structural formulas are not a source of investment-return forecasts. BCI accepts no liability for a reader's own investment or capital-allocation decisions made in response to a reading.

BCI Lab does not accept compensation from the entities it evaluates and does not adjust a reading in exchange for compensation from any party. Where a paid diligence engagement is active on a specific asset, public commentary on that asset is suspended for the duration. Full independence and conflict-of-interest terms are set out separately, in the Independence & Conflict Policy.

On the Name

BCI stands for Brand Capital Integrity: a measure of how structurally intact a brand's pricing power is, not what the brand is worth today. Valuation asks what a brand is worth right now. BCI asks how long that worth can hold.

The name was not always Capital. The framework was first called Brand Climate Index, on the idea that a brand's condition shifts the way weather does: slowly, atmospherically, without one visible cause. The metaphor was accurate, and it was also the reason the name did not survive. Climate is not something that can be rigorously measured at the level of a single asset, and a framework built to quantify pricing power could not keep a name built on something unquantifiable. Capital was the more honest word for what the four variables actually track: a structural asset that can be built, spent, or left to erode.

BCI Lab has no affiliation with brain-computer interface research, medical devices, or neurotechnology, fields that use the same three-letter acronym in an unrelated context.

About the Founder

Amanda Zhang is the Founding Partner of BCI Lab. She trained in economics and accounting, worked inside investment institutions, then spent a decade as a full-time fashion blogger before founding and operating UMFD, a luxury fragrance house, for four years.

The decade in fashion put her on the front line of what markets usually treat as pure sentiment: brand narratives rising and collapsing, and consumer taste and emotional attachment shifting underneath them. Watching that cycle repeat closely enough produced a conviction the finance training alone had not: consumer intuition is not unmeasurable, only unmeasured. Running UMFD tested that conviction from inside a business, watching how quickly a wider distribution deal or a discount cycle could spend down years of built-up scarcity, long before it showed up in a quarterly number. BCI Lab was established in 2025 to formalize what those two vantage points, financial and experiential, had each pointed toward on their own.

"We don't offer certainty. We reduce blindness. We don't replace judgment. We reveal exposure."

Institutional Governance

BCI Lab operates under a version-controlled protocol, currently the BCI Structural Integrity Protocol (BSIP). Methodological changes are classified as calibration refinements or material revisions; a material revision goes through internal review and a public version release before it is used in a published reading, and no variable definition or scoring coefficient is changed retroactively without disclosure. The complete version history, including which methodology governed which past report, is maintained in the public Methodology Version Register.

BCI's public research is built exclusively on public financial disclosures and lawfully obtained third-party data. A formally engaged diligence assignment that requires access to non-public information is governed separately, under the terms set out in the Independence & Conflict Policy, and does not change the standard applied to BCI's published research.

If a misclassification, a data error, or a methodological defect is identified in a published reading, BCI corrects the record, discloses the affected output, and annotates the version history. This is a standing practice, documented as it happens in the Methodology Version Register, including corrections to BCI's own earlier claims.

Rating Limitation Clause — This page and BCI Lab's published research do not constitute a credit rating, securities analysis, valuation opinion, or investment advice under any capital markets regulatory framework. BCI Score readings are structural diagnostic observations only.
Independence — BCI Lab operates under a subscription and fixed-fee institutional research model. BCI Lab does not accept compensation from any entity it assesses. Full terms are set out in the Independence & Conflict Policy.
Jurisdictional Limitation — BCI Lab's frameworks, reports, and this website are governed exclusively by the laws of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.
